Author Bio

A Colorado teacher for more than 25 years, Leslie Blauman's classroom is a model site for staff development in reading, writing, and thinking through the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC). She is a state and national literacy consultant. Leslie is coauthor of the title Comprehension Going Forward and the author of Kid-Tested Writing Lessons for Grades 3-6, The Inside Guide to the Reading-Writing Classroom, Grades 3-6, Teaching Evidence-Based Writing: Nonfiction, and Teaching Evidence-Based Writing: Fiction.

Debbie Millertaught and learned from children in The Denver Public Schools for thirty years. Debbie is the author of Reading with Meaning, Teaching with Intention, and the DVD’s The Joy of Conferring, Literacy Attendance, and Happy Reading. Debbie now presents workshops and works extensively with schools and districts on long-range planning and development of literacy programs.

Stephanie Harvey has spent her career teaching and learning about reading and writing. After fifteen years of public school teaching, both in regular education and special education classrooms, Stephanie worked for twelve years as a staff developer for the Denver based Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC), a partnership of leaders from education and business, who support innovation in public schools.

Anne Goudvis has been a classroom teacher, staff developer, and university instructor. For the past fifteen years she has worked as a staff developer with the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition and currently does staff development in schools around the country. Recent interests include working in schools with culturally and linguistically diverse students and integrating reading comprehension instruction with content area topics in social studies and science.

Cris Tovani has taught grades 1-12 in the Cherry Creek School District for the past twenty-seven years. In addition to teaching and coaching full time, she is a nationally known consultant focusing on content comprehension, assessment, and the creation of systemic change through Literacy Labs, a site Cris created with Sam Bennett to help teachers learn how to create and sustain lab classrooms. She is the author of several books and DVDs including: Do I Really Have to Teach Reading? So What Do They Really Know? and Comprehending Content

Harvey “Smokey” Daniels has been a city and suburban classroom teacher and a college professor, and now works as a national consultant and author on literacy education. In language arts, Smokey is known for his pioneering work on student book clubs. Harvey works with elementary and secondary teachers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, offering demonstration lessons, workshops, and consulting, with a special focus on creating, sustaining, and renewing student-centered inquiries and discussions of all kinds. Smokey shows colleagues how to simultaneously build students' reading strategies, balance their reading diets, and strengthen the social skills they need to become genuine lifelong readers.
